What Does Root Canal Treatment Involve?

During a root canal treatment, dentist will remove the diseased pulp lying within the tooth, extending from the crown to the tip of the root in the bone of the jaws. After this, the dentist will clean and seal the root canal(s) and the pulp chamber of the tooth.

Here's how a dentist at Castillo and Mulkay Dental can save your tooth through root canal treatment:

  • First, the dentist will make an opening through the tooth's crown into the pulp chamber.
  • Then the dentist will remove the pulp and clean, enlarge and shape the root canal(s) so that it can be safely filled.
  • The dentist will medicate the root canal(s) and the pulp chamber to remove germs and prevent infection.
  • The dentist will place a temporary filling to protect the tooth and may leave the tooth open for a few days.
  • You may be given medicine to help control infection.
  • The root canal dentist will remove the temporary filling from the pulp chamber and clean and fill the root canal(s).
  • Finally, the root canal dentist will place a gold or porcelain crown over the tooth.
